7 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Basement ContractorNovember 7, 2018
If you have an unfinished basement, then you have a space that offers loads of untapped potential. You can remodel your basement into almost anything you want, whether it’s a guest bedroom, a second living room, or a home theater room, just to name a few examples.
However, because of all the work that will need to be done, you’ll want to make sure that you hire a reputable basement contractor that can do quality work. The following are four questions you should ask any basement contractor before you decide to hire them.
1. Do they have a license?
Never work with a contractor who doesn’t have their license. A license proves that they are qualified to do the work, and the last thing you’ll want is an unqualified contractor performing construction work in your basement. This will likely result in potentially shoddy and unsafe construction.
2. Can they provide references?
A reputable basement contractor will have no problem providing you with a list of references that you can call. When speaking with past customers, ask about the quality of work they did as well as their experience working with them. Don’t trust a contractor that is unable to provide references or that refuses to do so. If this is the case, then odds are their past customers weren’t exactly pleased with the work that they did.
3. Can they provide an itemized bid?
First of all, make sure to ask if the bid is a fixed price or an estimate. If it’s an estimate, it may change after the project is finished. Secondly, ask if they can provide an itemized bid. This allows you to see exactly how much the contractor is charging for every aspect of your basement remodel, thereby giving you a much better idea of what everything will cost. It will also make it easier to compare the costs of the different contractors you may speak with.
4. How long will the project last?
You’ll want to know when the project begins and when it’s expected to end. This will give you the ability to make plans in case you need to get your kids or pets out of the home during construction so that your day-to-day life experiences as little disruption as possible.
5. Will they take care of any necessary permits?
Basement remodels may require permits depending on what renovations you’re doing. Make sure the contractor will get the permits on your behalf (avoid contractors who claim you don’t need to worry about permits for bigger remodeling projects or who ask you to get them yourself).
6. Who will do the actual construction?
Many contractors will hire subcontractors for different parts of the project. For example, if you’re building a bathroom in your basement, they will likely hire a plumber. Make sure that there will be someone in charge of all the subcontractors and find out how often they will be present on site.
7. What is their work process like?
You’ll want to know when they begin and end work each day, what measures they’ll take to prevent the rest of your home from getting dirty, whether they will clean up after themselves, and more. Their work process will have a big impact on your household, after all.
These are seven important questions you should ask a basement contractor to determine if they are reputable and whether they are the right fit for your project.
